FILMING ABANDONMENT

(click to follow link)

Through the purchase of my much-beloved Canon 7D, I gained access to shooting HD video on my dSLR. Following my documentary-led travels to Brazil with Killswitch Engage, I've been inspired me to expand video to feature the abandoned sites I explore for photography.

While I created and posted 2 videos in the past couple weeks, I recently posted the first video I edited in Final Cut Express (the manual is 1152 pages!) and, while there's so much to learn and correct, I did apply several initial features I wanted to here, including transitions, music editing, text and color treatment.

Please hop over to my brand-new Vimeo page and check out my first videos, already featuring the likes of Stehli Silk Mill and the yet-to-be-posted-here Scranton Lace Factory site. FYI: The link to the video page is, and always will be, available in the far right column of this blog.

Happy New Year!!! Welcome to the new decade…

  1. Happy New Year!

The videos are fantastic!! Wow! It must take a lot of time to edit them.

And the training school photos below!!

Just curious -- will you repost the Annie's House post? I can see it in the Google Reader. I love those pictures. They remind me of places my brothers and I used to find in the woods during the summer -- off abandoned roads. :)

  2. Hmmm… I must have mistakenly (and temporarily) posted the Annie's House images when I was drafting the post itself. Rest assured they are scheduled to return but only after the images I shot prior to the Alabama trip appear.

Anyway, thanks SO much for the kind words on the videos and images here. It's a privilege to have anyone stop by and view them and it's always appreciated. Happy New Year/Decade!

  3. Hey Tom, I just went over and looked at the Scranton Lace video... wow ! What a pleasure. A real work of art. Someone should do a documentary about you...

But seriously, that is a work of art, just totally hypnotizing... love the way you play with the focal point, shifting depth of field to bring in and out of focus.

But 1100 page of manual ??? You've got me drooling now, my Canon 40D which I dearly love is clearly no match for a 7D... Oh to be a little wealthier, to indulge in material things...

  4. (laughs) Believe me, paying as much as I did was painful but yet less painful then when I bought a cheaper dSLR and needed to upgrade within the year to go out on tour, etc. Anyway, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and I'm getting there with the whole video bit so keep looking for progress as they come along! I'm also a fan of the documentary idea as well. I'll make sure they only shoot my good side… ;)
